IN BRIEF.

Tamarind Mem

by Anita Rau Badami

(Viking/Penguin works Canada, 266 pp., C$19.99)

This first attempt novel has the pleasant tenor of reminiscence as it depicts
the peripatetic lifestyle of an Indian railway officer's family. Despite
the immediacy of its first-person narration, the rambling building
undermines the significance of solution events. All but buried in the mass
of other memories is the suicide of the mother's lover whose existence
belies the facade of happy domesticity.
